Cloudways Pricing Explained for UK Buyers (2026)

Cloudways pricing is usage-based: you pick a cloud provider and a server size, then pay for that server plus any add-ons you switch on. On the Flexible plans, the entry DigitalOcean server with 2GB RAM is listed at $11 a month, and the larger sizes climb steeply from there. Cloudways shows its prices in US dollars, so UK buyers should expect VAT and a currency conversion to be part of the real cost.

This guide explains how the pay-as-you-go model works across DigitalOcean, Vultr, Linode, AWS and Google Cloud, what the extras cost, and who the platform actually suits. It is a desk-research article based on the vendor’s own pages, not a hands-on test.

Cloudways pricing at a glance

Cloudways sells two broad products. Flexible is the classic managed cloud server: you choose a provider, a size and a data centre. Autonomous is a newer autoscaling WordPress product with fixed monthly tiers and metered overage. Both are billed in US dollars on the pricing page, with VAT, GST or sales tax added as a separate line depending on your location.

The practical consequence for a UK site owner is simple. There is no GBP price to compare against UK-priced hosts, so the number you see is a guide, not the invoice total. Budget for tax and exchange-rate movement on top.

Current plans and prices (checked 8 October 2026)

The table below shows what the pricing page displayed for the DigitalOcean Flexible lineup. Hourly rates also appear on the page; they did not reconcile cleanly with the monthly figures in the text I could read, so I have left them out. Check the live page or the console before you commit.

Entry (Micro / Small)2GB150GB2TB$11
Medium8GB4160GB5TB$88
8XL128GB242,560GB11TB$342

Every Flexible plan lists unlimited websites, unlimited visits and four free AI Copilot credits. The page also advertised 30% off for the first three months on all plans at the time of checking. Treat that as a promotion, not the standing price.

The Autonomous tier works differently. Prices are monthly, and each tier bundles a baseline number of servers, bandwidth and disk.

Beyond the bundle, the page lists overage of $1 per GB for disk and $0.04 per GB for bandwidth, plus autoscaling charges of $0.07, $0.10 and $0.12 per server per hour on Growth, Scale and Plus respectively. Each Autonomous server includes 100 PHP workers.

Monthly vs hourly billing

Flexible billing is hourly: Cloudways says you pay only for what you use, and plan changes apply to the invoice immediately. Invoices are issued in the first week of each month for the previous month’s usage, so you pay after the fact rather than up front.

That structure rewards short-lived work. A staging server for a client pitch, or a temporary scale-up during a campaign, costs only for the hours it exists. It also means a forgotten server keeps billing, which is the main way a pay-as-you-go bill drifts above expectations.

Both Flexible and Autonomous offer a three-day free trial with no credit card, and the page says you can cancel at any time. I could not open a refund or minimum-term clause, so I am not making claims about either.

What changes by provider and server size

The pricing page publishes plan-level prices only for DigitalOcean. Vultr, Linode, AWS and Google Cloud are described by location count, with no instance prices on the page I could read. That is a real limitation: you cannot build a cross-provider price table from the public page alone, and any article that does so is quoting from a console or an older snapshot.

ProviderData centres listedExtra bandwidth rate shown
DigitalOcean9 locations, including London and Frankfurt$0.02/GB
Vultr30 locationsNot shown
Linode25 data centresNot shown
AWS28 data centres$0.12/GB in all regions
Google Cloud28 data centres$0.10 to $0.17/GB, varying by region

Two points follow from this. First, bandwidth overage is where the providers diverge most visibly: the same extra terabyte costs very differently on DigitalOcean than on AWS. Second, Cloudways states that AWS and Google Cloud prices vary by region, with North America and Europe generally cheaper than Asia Pacific and South America. For a UK audience, a London or Frankfurt location keeps latency and cost sensible.

Size matters more than provider for most sites. Moving from the 2GB entry server to the 8GB Medium server multiplies the listed monthly price by eight, while RAM rises fourfold and vCPUs fourfold. The jump to 8XL is a different class of workload entirely.

What the extras cost

Several items many hosts charge for are listed as included: automated and on-demand backups, free SSL through Let’s Encrypt on Flexible, and free advanced staging and cloning. The paid extras on the pricing page are as follows.

Add-onListed price (USD)
Enterprise Cloudflare CDNfrom $4.99 per domain per month
Site Managerfrom $3 per app per month
Malware Protectionfrom $4 per app per month
SafeUpdatesfrom $3 per month
DNS Made Easy$0.50 per domain per month

Offsite backup storage and the Rackspace email add-on both appeared with conflicting figures in the page text, so I am not quoting a price for either. If you plan to rely on offsite backups or business email, confirm both in the console before you build a budget around them.

Support tiers

Round-the-clock support through live chat and tickets is listed on all plans. The support SLA then separates three tiers by response target. The SLA defines the target as the time to reach ‘work started’, not the time to fix the problem.

TierLive chat max durationHigh-priority ticket targetNormal-priority ticket targetPrice
Standard15 minutes3 hours12 hoursBase option
Advanced30 minutes30 minutes6 hoursListed at $100 a month; promo text shows $25 a month flat
PremiumNo limit, via private Slack10 minutes2 hoursPaid add-on, price not listed

Premium also includes phone support and a private Slack channel. If a target is missed, the SLA offers a credit of 5% of the monthly fee for each hour missed, capped at that month’s fees and paid only as invoice credit. High priority is reserved for events that make services unusable, so a slow page does not qualify.

Renewal and billing terms

  • Flexible is post-billed, with invoices in the first week of the following month.
  • Tax is shown as a separate line, and registered businesses can request exemption with a valid Tax ID.
  • Plan changes apply to the invoice immediately.
  • The promotional 30% discount was advertised for three months only, so model the full price for any longer plan.
  • Autonomous prices are monthly and carry metered overage for disk, bandwidth and autoscaled servers.

I could not retrieve the full terms of service text on refunds or minimum commitments, so check those directly before signing up.

Who each option is for

Entry Flexible server (2GB)

A single small WordPress site, a portfolio, or a brochure site for a local business. It is also a sensible place to start if you are still deciding whether the platform suits you.

Medium Flexible server (8GB)

A busy WooCommerce store, a membership site, or an agency running several client sites on one server. Unlimited websites per plan makes this the natural agency tier, provided the server has the headroom.

Autonomous Growth, Scale and Plus

Sites with unpredictable traffic that want autoscaling without managing it. The tiers are priced above the 2GB Flexible server, so they only make sense when traffic spikes are a real cost to you.

Advanced or Premium support

Teams without in-house sysadmin skills, or sites where an hour of downtime costs more than the add-on. If you are comfortable with the command line, Standard may be enough.

Is it good value?

The honest case for Cloudways is flexibility rather than the lowest sticker price. You get a choice of five infrastructure providers, hourly billing, free staging and included backups, which would otherwise be several line items elsewhere. The case against is predictability. Dollar pricing, post-billing, metered bandwidth and add-ons priced per app or per domain mean the monthly bill is harder to forecast than a fixed-price shared host.

For a small UK site, the entry server at $11 looks cheap, but add VAT, the CDN at $4.99 per domain and Malware Protection from $4 per app, and the true cost rises noticeably. That is not a criticism, only a reason to price the bundle you actually need rather than the headline.

Cheaper alternatives

If you want a fixed price in pounds and do not need a choice of cloud provider, a conventional managed WordPress host will be simpler to budget. Our guide to the best WordPress hosting compares general-purpose options, and the web hosting buying guide explains when shared hosting is enough and when it is not.

Premium alternatives

If you would rather pay for a fully managed, opinionated platform, higher-priced WordPress specialists compete directly. Our managed WordPress hosting comparison covers that tier, and the WooCommerce hosting roundup is the better starting point for stores.

Frequently asked questions

Does Cloudways charge in pounds?

The pricing page shows US dollars. Tax is added as a separate line depending on location, so a UK buyer should expect VAT on top of the listed price.

Is there a free trial?

Yes. Flexible and Autonomous both list a three-day trial with no credit card required, and the page says you can cancel at any time.

Are backups included?

Automated and on-demand backups are listed as included. The price of offsite backup storage was shown inconsistently, so confirm it in the console if you need it.

What happens if I exceed my bandwidth?

You pay for the excess only. The rates shown were $0.02 per GB on DigitalOcean, $0.12 per GB on AWS, and $0.10 to $0.17 per GB on Google Cloud depending on region. Autonomous overage is $0.04 per GB.

Is 24/7 support really included?

Round-the-clock live chat and ticket support is listed on all plans. Faster response targets, with Slack and phone access at the top tier, are paid add-ons.

Final value verdict

Cloudways is good value for agencies, developers and growing sites that benefit from choosing infrastructure, scaling up for a few hours, and getting staging and backups without extras. It is weaker value for a single, steady, low-traffic site owner who wants one predictable price in pounds, because the usage-based model and dollar billing add variables that a fixed-price host removes.

The reason is structural. Pay-as-you-go saves money when your usage is uneven and costs you certainty when it is not. Decide which of those describes your site, then price the specific server, add-ons and support tier you would need, with VAT, before you choose.
