The best SiteGround alternative for most UK site owners is Krystal, a UK host that publishes plain GBP prices and a 60-day money-back guarantee. If your main complaint is cost, Hostinger is cheaper over a long commitment and IONOS has a lower renewal price on a single-site plan. If you have outgrown shared hosting and can budget in US dollars, Kinsta is the premium option.
Nothing here comes from hands-on testing. This guide compares what each vendor states on its own pricing page, and it says so wherever a figure could not be confirmed.

Why people look for SiteGround alternatives
The reason most often behind a switch is the gap between the first-term price and the renewal price. SiteGround’s WordPress hosting page lists StartUp at $2.99 a month and says it “Renews at $17.99/mo. Prepaid for 12 months.” GrowBig goes from $4.99 to $29.99 a month, and GoGeek from $7.99 to $44.99. Calculated from those figures, the StartUp renewal price is about six times the introductory price.
The page we could open shows prices in US dollars only. SiteGround may display GBP to UK visitors elsewhere on its site, but we could not verify that, so the figures in this article are USD and are not converted.
Plan limits are the second reason. StartUp covers one website with 10 GB of storage. Moving to GrowBig is what unlocks unlimited websites and 50 GB, so a second project can push you up a pricing tier. We found no monthly visit allowance stated on the page, so we make no claim either way about traffic caps.
That is the full list of reasons we can support from official pages. We have not included complaints about speed or support quality, because those would need testing or independent data we have not collected.

Best overall alternative: Krystal
Krystal is a UK hosting company, and its web hosting page lists six WordPress-ready plans in pounds, including VAT. Amethyst is Β£7 a month for one site with 10 GB of NVMe storage. Ruby is Β£11 a month for five sites with 25 GB. Emerald, at Β£19 a month, removes the stated caps on sites and storage.
Three details make it a sensible default for a SiteGround leaver. Every plan carries a 60-day money-back guarantee, which the page describes as “no-quibble”, with domain costs excluded. Bandwidth has no cap on any plan. Backups are daily on Amethyst and Ruby, and every four hours from Emerald upwards.
The page offers annual billing with a 16% saving and two-year billing with a 25% saving, but it does not publish the resulting prices, and it does not describe any introductory discount. That means we cannot confirm whether the monthly figure rises at renewal. Ask before you pay, and get the answer in writing.
Krystal is the best fit for UK freelancers, small businesses and agencies that want predictable GBP billing and UK-based support staff, which the page states. It is a weaker fit if you want the lowest possible headline price.
Best cheaper alternative: Hostinger (and IONOS for a lower renewal)
Hostinger’s UK page lists Single at Β£1.49 a month, Premium at Β£2.99 and Unlimited at Β£3.99, excluding VAT. Those prices need the 48-month term, paid upfront. The Single plan comes to Β£71.52 for the four years. Renewal is stated as Β£7.99 a month for Single, Β£10.99 for Premium and Β£13.99 for Unlimited.
So Hostinger is cheapest if you will happily commit for four years. It is a poor choice if you want to leave the door open, because the low price is the long-term price. The page also lists unlimited free migrations and a 30-day money-back guarantee on all plans.
IONOS suits people who care more about the renewal figure than the intro. Its UK WordPress page, priced excluding VAT, shows Start at Β£3 a month for six months and Β£5 a month afterwards. That covers one website with 25 GB of storage. On our arithmetic, 48 months of IONOS Start costs Β£228, against Β£71.52 for Hostinger Single, but IONOS’s renewal price is lower than Hostinger’s Β£7.99 and it asks for no multi-year prepayment on the page we read.
Compare the two on your own time horizon. Over four years Hostinger wins on total cost. Over one or two years, with the option to leave, IONOS’s step up from Β£3 to Β£5 is much gentler than SiteGround’s jump.
Best premium alternative: Kinsta
Kinsta is managed WordPress hosting for sites where uptime and support matter more than the monthly bill. Its pricing page states that prices “exclude tax and are in USD”, so UK buyers should expect currency conversion on their card statement. We have not converted anything.
The entry Launch plan costs $35 a month, or $30 a month billed annually ($350 a year). It covers one site with 75,000 monthly visits and 15 GB of storage, with 14 days of backup retention. Build, for two sites and 200,000 visits, is $69 monthly. The page lists unlimited free migrations on all plans.
Kinsta states that sites stay online when they exceed visit, storage or CDN limits, and that overage is billed on actual usage. The exact overage rates were not on the page, so check them before you rely on a tight allowance.
This is the right level for stores, publishers and agencies for whom an hour of downtime costs more than a year of hosting. It is overkill for a brochure site. Our managed WordPress hosting guide covers the wider field.
Best by use case
- Small UK business site: Krystal, for GBP billing, daily backups and UK-based support.
- Lowest total cost with a long commitment: Hostinger, if four years prepaid suits you.
- One site, gentle renewal: IONOS Start, at Β£5 a month after six months.
- Several client sites: Krystal Ruby (five sites, Β£11 a month) or Hostinger Premium (three sites). Kinsta Build covers two sites, and Expand covers five at $99 a month.
- High-traffic or revenue-critical site: Kinsta, with the dollar billing that comes with it.

Feature comparison
| Provider | Websites on entry plan | Storage on entry plan | Backups | Money-back guarantee | Migration |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| SiteGround StartUp | 1 | 10 GB | Free backups included | Not confirmed for this plan | Free site transfer (limited offer, per page) |
| Krystal Amethyst | 1 | 10 GB NVMe | Daily | 60 days | Page promises a smooth move from other hosts; fee not stated |
| Hostinger Single | 1 | 10 GB SSD | Free weekly | 30 days | Unlimited free migrations |
| IONOS Start | 1 | 25 GB | Automatic backups (see note) | 30 days | Separate paid service linked; not listed in plan |
| Kinsta Launch | 1 | 15 GB | 14-day retention | Not confirmed | Unlimited free migrations |
IONOS lists automatic backups on every plan, but its feature table is unclear for Start, so confirm before buying. Where a cell says “not confirmed”, the vendor page we read did not state it.
Pricing comparison (checked 8 October 2026)
Prices are in each vendor’s own currency and are not converted. Hostinger and IONOS exclude VAT, and Krystal includes it. SiteGround and Kinsta are in USD.
| Plan | Currency | Intro price | Renewal price | Term notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SiteGround StartUp | USD | $2.99/mo | $17.99/mo | Prepaid for 12 months |
| SiteGround GrowBig | USD | $4.99/mo | $29.99/mo | Prepaid for 12 months |
| Krystal Amethyst | GBP (inc. VAT) | Β£7/mo | Not stated | 16% annual and 25% biennial saving, prices not shown |
| Hostinger Single | GBP (ex. VAT) | Β£1.49/mo | Β£7.99/mo | 48-month term, paid upfront |
| IONOS Start | GBP (ex. VAT) | Β£3/mo for 6 months | Β£5/mo | One site, 25 GB |
| Kinsta Launch | USD | $35/mo monthly or $30/mo annual | Not stated as different | Excludes tax |
The pattern is clear. Hostinger and SiteGround both rely on a big gap between intro and renewal, while IONOS has a smaller step. Krystal and Kinsta publish a single price list without a stated promotional rate, which makes budgeting easier.
Switching considerations: migration, DNS and downtime
Moving a WordPress site is routine, but plan it. Ask the new host whether it will migrate for you. Hostinger and Kinsta state that they do so free of charge. Krystal describes a smooth transition from cPanel, Plesk or other systems. IONOS links to a separate migration service.
Keep your old hosting live until the move is finished. Lower your DNS time to live (TTL) a day or two beforehand, test the copied site using the new host’s preview or a hosts-file entry, then change the nameservers or A record. Most visitors see the new server within hours, though propagation times vary by provider.
Do not cancel SiteGround the moment DNS changes. Check forms, email delivery, SSL and scheduled tasks first. Our guide on how long website migration actually takes explains the typical timeline.
One cost to check before leaving: SiteGround plans are prepaid for 12 months, so a mid-term move may waste unused months. Check the refund terms on your own invoice.
Who should switch
- You are about to renew StartUp at $17.99 a month and the jump is not justified by your traffic.
- You run a single small site and would be happy on a 10 GB plan with a clearer price list.
- You want GBP billing and UK-based support.
- You are comfortable with a four-year commitment in return for a low monthly price (Hostinger).
Who should stay with SiteGround
- You have a stable site and the renewal price is acceptable to you.
- You run multiple sites and use GrowBig or GoGeek features you would otherwise rebuild elsewhere.
- You value not having to migrate. A move always carries some risk and effort.
Frequently asked questions
Is SiteGround more expensive than its alternatives?
At renewal, on the pages we read, yes for entry plans. SiteGround StartUp renews at $17.99 a month in USD. IONOS Start renews at Β£5 and Hostinger Single at Β£7.99, both in GBP excluding VAT. The currencies differ, so compare the figures on your own bill.
Does Hostinger really cost Β£1.49 a month?
Only on the 48-month term, paid upfront. The page lists Β£71.52 for the four years on Single, then Β£7.99 a month on renewal.
Which alternative is best for a UK business?
Krystal is our first pick for UK buyers who want GBP prices, a 60-day guarantee and UK-based support. Its page does not state whether the price changes at renewal, so confirm that first.
Can I migrate from SiteGround for free?
Hostinger and Kinsta both state unlimited free migrations. Krystal promises a smooth transition but does not state a fee on its page. IONOS lists migration as a separate service.
How much downtime should I expect when switching?
With a copied site tested in advance and a lowered TTL, downtime can be minimal. Vendors do not guarantee zero downtime, so schedule the DNS change for a quiet period.
Final recommendation
Choose Krystal if you want the simplest UK purchase: GBP prices, daily backups, a 60-day guarantee and no published promotional gap. We recommend it first because it removes the thing people dislike about SiteGround, the renewal surprise, as far as the pricing page shows. The caveat is that it does not state renewal terms, so verify them.
Choose Hostinger if you will commit for four years, and IONOS if you want one site with a modest rise. Choose Kinsta only if your site earns enough that managed performance justifies USD billing. Stay with SiteGround if you are content with the renewal price and do not want a migration.
Whatever you choose, read the renewal line before paying. That single number does more to decide the true cost than the headline price.
