How We Test Mini PCs — Urivio Testing Methodology

Our Testing Methodology

Every mini PC we recommend at Urivio goes through a standardised testing protocol before we publish a verdict. We do not rely on manufacturer-provided benchmark data, press release specs, or short single-run results. Every number you see on this site comes from our own testing environment.

The Hardware We Use to Test

Our test bench is consistent across every review: the same monitor, the same keyboard, the same smart plug, the same cables. This ensures benchmark-to-benchmark comparability as we add new machines.

  • Power measurement: Calibrated smart plug measuring watt-hours at idle and full load
  • Displays: 1080p and 1440p reference monitors for gaming and display output testing
  • Storage testing: CrystalDiskMark 8 on a consistent test drive
  • Ambient temperature: All thermal tests conducted at 20–22°C room temperature

CPU Performance Testing

Cinebench R23 — Sustained 30-minute loop. This is the most important test in our suite. We run Cinebench R23 multi-core on a 30-minute continuous loop, not a single cold run. The first-run score shows peak performance; the loop reveals sustained performance after the thermal management system kicks in. A mini PC that scores 14,000 on a cold run but drops to 9,000 after 10 minutes is a different machine from one that holds 13,500 throughout. We report both the cold score and the 30-minute sustained average.

We also record CPU package temperatures at 5-minute intervals during the sustained loop and the point at which throttling begins (if at all).

GPU and Gaming Performance

For integrated GPU testing, we use 3DMark Time Spy as the GPU benchmark, plus real-game testing at 1080p medium settings across a consistent title set. Our gaming test suite includes CS2, Elden Ring, Cyberpunk 2077, GTA V, and Fortnite — chosen to represent esports, open-world, demanding AAA, open-world sandbox, and battle royale workloads respectively.

All gaming tests are run after a 15-minute warm-up period to reflect sustained gaming performance rather than burst performance on a cold machine.

Developer and Docker Workloads

We run two developer benchmarks on every machine. First, a C++ compilation test: compiling a standardised ~1,200 source file C++ project and recording total build time with full parallel compilation (-j[core count]). Second, a Docker container workload: spinning up 20 containers (Node.js, PostgreSQL, Redis, Nginx, and supporting services) and measuring startup time and sustained CPU/memory usage under typical development traffic.

AI and Local LLM Inference

We test local AI performance using Ollama with Llama 3 8B (Q4_K_M quantisation) and measure tokens per second on a standardised 512-token prompt. This gives a directly comparable inference speed number across all machines we test. Where a machine has an NPU, we also note whether Ollama can utilise it and any speed difference observed.

Storage and Memory Testing

Storage performance is measured with CrystalDiskMark 8 — sequential read/write and random 4K read/write. Memory bandwidth is measured with AIDA64 memory benchmark. For machines with soldered RAM, we document this explicitly as it affects longevity and upgrade options.

Noise and Thermal Testing

Fan noise is measured at 20cm from the front of the unit using a calibrated decibel meter — at idle (after 10 minutes of desktop), under sustained CPU load (30-minute Cinebench loop), and during gaming (30-minute gaming session). We report dB(A) at each state. Chassis surface temperatures are measured with an IR thermometer at defined points on the top and sides after sustained load.

Power Consumption

Measured via smart plug at: idle (10 minutes on desktop, no background tasks), sustained CPU load (Cinebench loop), gaming load (30-minute gaming session), and sleep/hibernate states. We calculate estimated annual electricity cost at UK peak rate (28p/kWh) assuming 8 hours/day active use.

Our Scoring System

We score mini PCs out of 10 across five dimensions: Performance (sustained, not burst), Value for Money (performance per pound at UK pricing), Build Quality and Connectivity, Thermals and Acoustics, and Developer/Pro Workload Suitability. The overall score is a weighted average with Performance and Value weighted highest.

Scores are relative to the current mini PC market and are updated when new reference machines change the landscape significantly.
